daddy Brennan presses dad Harris just about an occult conspiracy; the shaken Harris gives Brennan a photograph of a baby behind the publish "Scianna" inscribed. Harris is killed later than a falling pipe splits his head open.
In Rome, 1971, along with left-wing protests, American novitiate Margaret Daino arrives at the Vizzardeli Orphanage. She meets past Cardinal Lawrence, dad Gabriel, Abess Sister Silva, nun Anjelica, and her roommate and fellow novitiate Luz. Luz invites Margaret to a disco, where they meet two men. Luz dances subsequently one of the men while Margaret dances later the extra man named Paolo in the past blacking out. She awakens the neighboring daylight next no memory of what happened.
Margaret bonds in the same way as the mistreated orphan Carlita, who is plagued by bad visions. father Brennan warns her practically Carlita, motto "evil things" will happen regarding her. Margaret spots Carlita showing Anjelica a drawing of a pregnant girl subconscious restrained; moments later, Anjelica self-immolates and hangs herself.
Brennan explains that radicals within the church, desperate to regain capability adjacent to the rise of secularism, aspiration to bring more or less the Antichrist to create alarm bell and drive people support to the church, once Carlita intended to be his mother. During a showground trip, a riot breaks out and Margaret experiences demonic hallucinations. Sister Silva postpones Margaret's vows and orders her to disaffect herself from Carlita. She spots Paolo; horrified, he tells her to "look for the mark" in the past an oncoming truck fatally impales him.
Margaret sneaks into Sister Silva's office. She uncovers a hidden, underground chamber and a series of subject files, every labeled "Scianna". They contain photos of mostly dysmorphic babies like a birthmark in the disturb of three sixes, when Carlita as seemingly the lonely survivor. Margaret is intercepted and a skin condition the mark on Carlita's palate in the past innate imprisoned.
Father Gabriel frees Margaret; as they inspect the files in the manner of Brennan, they discover that unconventional baby had survived. Margaret locates the mark on her own scalp and suddenly remembers that she was antagonistically impregnated in a satanic ritual the night she blacked out at the disco. The Devil will compulsion to mate with his own spawn in order to conceive the Antichrist, and Margaret had been brought to Rome as Carlita is too young. The work drives off to have the pregnancy aborted, but different car crashes into theirs on the mannerism and Margaret's womb hurriedly fills.
She awakens strapped to a hospital bed and is greeted by Cardinal Lawrence, the head of the conspiracy. Cardinal Lawrence and the additional conspirators watch as she gives birth to two kids via caesarean, a girl and a boy; the latter is hailed as the Antichrist. Luz and the man who was taking into consideration Paolo at the disco are revealed to be in the midst of the conspirators. Pretending to be complicit considering asking to keep the baby, Margaret stabs Lawrence but cannot bring herself to execute her son. Luz stabs Margaret as the conspirators escape like the guy and set the chamber fired up to cover their tracks. Carlita saves Margaret and her daughter, and Margaret sees a demonic jackal in the flames. The baby boy is perfect to American diplomat Robert Thorn to namelessly replace the child his wife Katherine has supposedly miscarried.[a]
Years later, Margaret lives secluded in the mountains past Carlita and her daughter, now a glad family. Brennan appears and warns that the conspirators will be hunting her, and that her son has been named Damien.
